Motivation.  It is a key to being successful and reaching goals.  However, being motivated is not an automatic process.  Motivation needs fuel.  How can we get motivated to reach our goals and take the steps we know are necessary?  Since I discuss this at length in my book, Success Is S.I.M.P.L.E., I am not going to go in a lot of detail here.  However, I want to provide you just one avenue that is guaranteed to help us to get motivated.  In fact, it is something I personally do EVERYDAY to get motivated and stay motivated.  What is it?

First, let me say that it is important to understand what I mentioned earlier about motivation being fed.  Motivation isn’t automatic.  It is emotional and our emotions can be affected by outside influences.  Someone pulls out in front of us in traffic; our boss chews on us for some perceived error; our children get in trouble at school; our spouse does that one little thing they know that irritates us; we hit our thumb with the hammer when hanging a picture; bill collectors call and are rude; and the list goes on.  Sometimes we just wake up on the wrong side of the bed and are in a bad mood from the start.  What can we do?  This one thing can help us get motivated and positive.  Her it is…read motivational books and listen to CD’s or videos.

Motivational books fortify us with the willpower and belief that we can accomplish what we set out to do.  If our schedule is such that we do not have time to read, then we can listen to CD’s or videos on our computer or in the car.  YouTube has a huge supply of material and it is all free.  We can do a search and just let it play while we are at work.  I listen to something everyday to get motivated whether it is Tony Robbins, Les Brown, Jim Rohn, Zig Ziglar, Stephen Covey or anybody else I can find.  I find someone to listen to everyday so that I can get motivated and do what I need to do to be successful.  Without it, I probably would get nothing accomplished or at least a lot less.

If you want to be motivated and accomplish the goals you have set for yourself, then do something proactive to feed your emotional state and get motivated.  It works.  If you doubt this, then just try it out.  Try it  for a week and at the end of the week take note of how you feel, not only emotionally, but physically as well.  Below I have added a link to a video by Les Brown.  Watch it and I guarantee you feel differently at is conclusion.  If it works with this one little instance, then wouldn’t it make sense that it will work everyday, week, month and so on?  Just imagine what you can accomplish by making this one SIMPLE change in your life.  Success is only difficult when we make it so.  The truth is…Success Is S.I.M.P.L.E.!

This morning I had an argument with my wife, or she had one with me.  Either way it was an argument with mistranslations, misunderstandings, miscommunications and you already know how these things go.  No winner and 2 losers.  I came into the office totally “messed up” and unfocused with all sorts of negative things on my mind.  How would I get over it?  How would this situation be solved?  It would be easy to say just get over it but we all know that it doesn’t always work that way.  So here is what i did.  I called a friend/mentor and this is what happened.

I did not reveal the details of our argument.  I only revealed that there was one and it messed up my attitude and I was having trouble changing it.   As a professor of psychology and a social worker my friend/mentor gave me some AWESOME advice that I want to share with you.

The advice I received was so SIMPLE (if you have read my book or blogs or articles you know how much I love this word) that I was surprised by it’s effectiveness.  When we are “messed up”, as I described myself after the argument, we feel as if we have no control.  Therefore, we should take action of something we can control, such as cleaning and organizing our “messed up” desk.  This allows us to be productive and to emotionally and physically control something.  It changes the electrical and chemical processes in our brain to feel more in control and thus more positive.   It doesn’t necessarily have to be your desk but something that you can control and “clean up” or “organize”.  Well I followed the advice and it worked!

This SIMPLE method or activity can quickly change the way we feel and change our attitude which we all know plays an important part in our daily success.  I would like to say thank you to my friend/mentor for such a SIMPLE yet successful method to changing attitude.   Thus, another way to show that Success Is SIMPLE.
